Microsoft removed the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 package from downloads or transferred it to another place. However you can download it from https://practiline.com/download/2008-vcredist_x64.exe . After downloading and installing just repeat the PractiCount installation.
Here is the step by step instruction on how to solve the problem (it occasionally happens in some Windows installations):
Right-click on the PractiCount icon on your desktop, then select 'Properties', select 'Compatibility' tab, then tick the "Run this program as an administrator" option lilke on the screenshot and check again.
Why PractiCount gives zero results for MS Office files?
- First of all please check that the appropriate MS Office applications are installed in your system. MS Office Starter Edition or cloud based versions will not work with PractiCount
- Please also make sure that you have not unchecked all the document section options in Settings>Applications>General. In this case the program will also render the zero results.
- This problem can also sometimes be caused by the Norton Antivirus office plug-in. Try to switch it off in Norton Antivirus settings and try again.
- Besides there might be cases when other programs also using MS Word block PractiCount access to it. Or MS Office was incorrectly installed - for example, on top of the previous version or two Office versions installed in your system. In this case reinstallation of MS Office might be necessary.
- With Office 2010 and 2013 with some documents PractiCount might render zero results if the documents counted are open.
Error message "Mismatch in datapacket"
Seems some files went corrupt, hence the "mismatch" error. Try to uninstall PractiCount, delete the PractiCount folder from Program Files, then reinstall. If needed, you can backup your settings configuration via the File>Settings menu in PractiCount and restore them back in the new installation.
Why PractiCount counts more than MS Word?
MS Word does not count text in headers, footers, text boxes, autoshapes, inserted Office documents (Word, Excel and PowerPoint files or objects) while PractiCount does, thus preventing you from losing hard earned money. However PractiCount is highly configurable, so if you want it to count just like MS Word, then just switch these options off in Settings.
I get a zero count result for a certain PDF file though there is text in it. What's wrong?
Please check that this is not a scanned (e.g. a fax) or protected PDF file. If this is a scanned image, you will need to use an OCR software first before you will be able to count the files with PractiCount. Besides the file might be protected from copying and text extraction. In this case it cannot be counted as well, you will need to remove the protection first.
All PDF files are not counted. What to do?
You can try the following work-around:
- Click on Start in Windows, scroll to 'Windows System', right click on 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run as administrator'
- Paste or type there the following command:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\PractiCount and Invoice (Standard)\XpdfText.dll" (or regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\PractiCount and Invoice (Business)\XpdfText.dll" depending on your PractiCount version or its location)
and press 'Enter'. Make sure that the file path is correct.
- Then check again with PractiCount.
If you have UAC (User Account Control) running, switch it off temporarily before the procedure.
I am getting an error "Unable to register the DLL/OCX:RegSvr32 failed"
You need to install one of these Microsoft packages depending on your Windows version:

It seems the midas.dll library does not install automatically for some reason. Try to close PractiCount, unzip the downloaded midas.dll file and put it into the c:\windows\system32\ (c:\winnt\system32\) folder. You might also need to manually register midas.dll. To do this you need to open Start>Run and copy there this text: regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\midas.dll (or regsvr32.exe c:\winnt\system32\midas.dll, depending on your system) and press OK. After that launch PractiCount.
Can PractiCount count text in double-byte languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean?
Yes, starting with the 3.0 version PractiCount provides full support for counting text in double-byte languages such as Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
Why do I get an error message "Call was rejected by callee" when trying to count a file?
This error might occur if you have MS Office 2000 and Norton Antivirus with an office plug-in.
Certain inconsistency of MS Office 2000 products with Norton Antivirus 2000 and 2001 is officially recognized by Microsoft and was corrected in the MS Office 2002 (XP).
I cannot count a WordPerfect file! What is the problem?
Please check if MS Word is installed on your computer. PractiCount requires it to count a WordPerfect file. If it is installed and WP files are not counted, just try to open a WordPerfect file from within MS Word and it will install all necessary converters. After that you will be able to count WP files with PractiCount.
Why PowerPoint's statistics gives smaller word count than PractiCount?
PowerPoint counts text only in slides and does not count text in comments, headers, footers, handouts. PractiCount and Invoice can count this text if proper settings are set. Export to MS Word also gives smaller amount because only slides are exported.
There are two types of line count in PractiCount:
'Lines' - like in MS Word, when even 1 character per line constitutes a line, and
Custom Lines' - where you can set a line as a number of characters with or without spaces (e.g. 65 characters per line).
These are two different columns in the Report. You need to look at the "Custom Lines" column and set it also as the pricing unit in the 'Units' combo box if you use this type of billing. The same with "Lines".
Does PractiCount and Invoice work under Macintosh OS?
No, only Windows OS is supported. However it is possible for PractiCount to operate on Mac under Windows installed on a virtual machine like Parallels Desktop etc..
